Take a look at TextMate too - it's the daddy of text editors on the mac. You can trial TextMate and Coda (Espresso is still in development), so have a good play with each before you buy.
I am currently PC based, though I'm experimenting with running Leopard in VMware in order to trial Coda and Textmate. Having tried them I think I would switch to Mac in a second, but at the moment I just can't afford it.
For my web dev I currently use Notepad++ with some addons (Explorer and FTP mostly).

I’m trying out the Espresso demo - it's really good, with lots of nice little touches.
The tag auto-complete is exceptionally well done. Examples:
1. Typing "<p[return key]" will generate "<p></p>", smartly placing the cursor in between the tags rather than after them, so you can type in content immediately.
2. You can type out a full tag manually, and then the instant you start to close it, it'll finish it for you. So if I type "<blockquote>whatever</", the instant I type the slash, it finishes it off with "</blockquote>". The thing is, you'd be closing the nearest tag manually anyway (otherwise the document wouldn't be valid), so it makes perfect sense. Brilliant.
Some other thoughtful features:
- "Quick Publish" will auto-upload your file to the server every time you save it. You can toggle it on/off with one click - Wrapping a link around selected text will automatically fill in the HREF attribute with the contents of the clipboard - The Find feature is identical to Safari's, with the popping yellow bubbles
Etc., etc. They really seem to have thought of everything.
I haven't used Coda so I don't know how it compares in these regards. But Espresso definitely seems great so far.
Just thought I should point out... Espresso is part of the MacHeist bundle (though it is the last app to be unlocked) and in previous years all apps were (as far as I know) unlocked. Looks like a good deal. I'm a big Coda fan, and switching to Espresso seems a bit unloyal of me, but I need to download the app and try it out. I did try it out when it was in Beta, and definitely found it lacking, but perhaps it has been improved in the 1.0. Ultimately though, I think the competition is good, and Coda can only grow stronger as a result.
Yep, I'm waiting for it to get unlocked in the MacHeist bundle. The whole bundle is $25 less than Espresso alone at the regular price! And you get a full version that can be upgraded and everything.
I tried out the Espresso trial and have decided to stick with Coda. The biggest thing I couldn't get over is with Espresso, you can't just set up a ftp login to connect to a server. You have to create a local folder for your project. My workflow consists of working off a local linux box with apache, and then using git to push my changes to the live server. I don't work off my local machine, so I need to be able to just set it up so I can connect to a server and work from there.
I dunno if I'm not doing something correctly, but that's the biggest issue I had with Espresso. As far as editing text, it seemed very similar to Coda.
As of today, I'll be using Espresso. I updated Coda today (after not updating in awhile) and got a nice message saying "Don't pirate Coda... (et al)". I contacted Panic and they won't honour my receipt of purchase. No problem with Transmit, though. For such a great company, they sure know how to ruin a day.

does anybody know if there is any auto-formatting in espresso? that is the one thing that bugs me in coda. I mean formatting whole (html) pages, like you can do in dw, preferrably with tag libraries.

I got it sorted out. They took the time to go back and look at their order history and found they had a glitch in their system.
