  • A site I am doing for a friend of mine, please let me know what you think so far.

  • Very hard to read the text on that background, and I would most definitely remove the letter-spacing.

I'd say keep on going for now, it's tough to comment on the rest when I can't quite get past the main text.
  • All right removed letter-spacing, and darkened background a smidge and lightened text a smidge, hopefully it helps, I must say I have had no problems reading the text but that is probably a forest for the trees kind of thing..

I can only focus on the background image dude
  • OK any better or is the image still too distracting?

Instead of making everything in the background darker, make it lighter and the text darker.
  • Ok made a huge shift here http://back40internetinnovators.com/portraits/index2.htm I can move back to the middle some if needed but I am trying to increase readability first and then I can back it off as needed.

Anywho let me know, thanks in advance.

  • Yea, I agree... I know its cool to have a whole image for a background, but you have to make your font readable... Also, I always think having "Navigation" is... ehh. If its not apparent that its not navigation, its not good design\layout.

On another note... When I actually started reading, I was suprised. I thought this was an military or patriotic site at first. It doesn't scream "portraits"... in fact, to me, it doesn't even whisper it.

Lastly.. I see your header image is actually an image. I had to figure this out by "view image"... If you're going to have an image, make it something you can't accomplish with CSS\html. It'll have more visual appeal.. especially if it's a business, you want a sort of logo.

    My 2 cents. =)

  • I think the problem your having with the text not being readable is the fact your using an image with so much going on (contrast wise) as your background image.

if this has less detail, you may see the page better.

or maybe bold your text, this may help

if your doing a photography site, then one of the best I have seen is this: http://lonelywolf.pl/
his site, shows exactly what he does, and it is very clear and great use of the space.

I think that if your doing a photography site, you may have to totally re-design, I don't think you will get more than just family and friends visiting for very long.

you have to try and catch your audience, make them want to stay, not make it difficult for them to see/read and not to make it too much text either
  • I took ikthius' advice and reworked the site, I am working with picture and frames right now so I used filler on the content area, but at least the basic layout is there. I wanted a few opinions before I went much further.

    Thanks much in advance.
