  • Please critique my wip website?

This site is meant to be minimalistic and and simple while using some CSS3.

I'm going to use this site to display my upcoming game. It is still a work in progress, so I'm very interested in knowing what others think about it.

There's a few CSS3 tricks you cannot see. For instance, when the browser loads, the navigation will light up and "wave" across. Also, each link in the navigation is a different color. I wanted to use 3 colors for this site.

(Don't have a live site yet.. Working on it offline.)
  • Personally, I think the noise is a little too much...It would be way nicer if you made the base layout in pure CSS instead of having to use images (which is what will have to happen...) it will be much cleaner in my opinion and cut http requests down a bit. Can't wait to see it live.
  • So would you prefer I remove all of the noise and replace the headers with a solid color (or a gradient?)

Anything else you feel like could be added? (other than a logo of course.)
  • I'm with kgscott on this one. I really like the design, but the noise makes it a little bit harder on the eyes. Other than that, I think it's a really cool idea. Let us know when it's done so we can see it!
  • What I really want to know is if you guys like no noise or just a little bit of noise and if the headers should just be solid colors. Please let me know.

What idea do you think was cool?
  • I feel like no noise would look a lot better.

    I like:
    The Colors/Bottom Border Colors
    Font Choices

    I might change:
A little less top/bottom padding on the nav
Maybe a little bit more top/bottom padding on the sub-headers
Little more space above your footer text after the body.

Other than those small things, good work!
  • What should be background be then?

How do you feel about a different color scheme for every new page? (Red, Green, Blue) (It is a small site with only 3 pages so it shouldn't be too crazy)
  • I actually like the gray that you already have for the background, just without the noise. As for a different color scheme, you can always go that route, but I feel it'd be more confusing than keeping it the same throughout all the pages.
  • Really? Hm.. Well, here's it without any noise.

  • Hm, maybe some sort of simple design would be nice on the background (Something like the background here on CSSTricks). And maybe try and define the content area with a simple border or shadow might help a little bit. Other than that, I think it will look pretty good once it has content on it.
  • I had a version with rounded borders and shadows.. Here we go.

  • I kinda liked the squared look more, however I do like the white background/drop shadows that you have in that version. Maybe that but squared?
  • That seems out of place though, rounded with squared seems weird.
  • Oh my bad, I meant keep it all squared, not just the body.
  • Anything else you would like to recommend? Like anything I should add?

I'd still love everyone else's opinion!!
  • That's about all I've got for now. The best thing you can do now is put some filler content (Lorem ipsum) to help bring to life exactly what you want the columns to look like, etc. Other than that, it's coming along smoothly!
  • Do you know if you need to purchase Segoe UI Light to use it.?
  • Looks like you do, since it's a Microsoft owned font.

  • Argh, gonna have to find a new font. Any recommendations? :P
  • I don't have time to look right now, but Helvetica or Arial are good placeholders to start. :P
  • @misterrpg What's the "bump" for?

My opinion is that you have little to no content and I don't really see what you're trying to accomplish with the content you do have.

Not all Microsoft or Adobe fonts have an EULA that you can't use it on the web. However, in the case of Segoe UI, you can only use it for Printed Material, Online (but using images), or through TV advertising.

I'd like to hear why you're not up for purchasing a font? I'm sure you're aware but there are numerous web font services that you can sign up for. Including MyFonts, Webtype or Typekit.
  • Copy font is way too small for my taste. And "Best viewed in..." messages take me back to 1997.
