New MAC user !

  • hi,

after 15 years on PC + Windows, I bought MAC book Pro, I want to switch to MAC

    question is
when doing web design, what tools, apps I need to get coding faster and more convenient?

I know of CODA and there my knowledge ends :)
I have budget of $700 to buy SW

    any recommendations?
  • I use Sublime Text 2 as my default editor now.

    Photoshop for design.

I use MAMP Pro and Billings.
  • Here is a list of some of the main apps I use. You can have a look at them at see if they will work for you.

    • Sparrow
    • Sublime Text 2
    • Transmit
    • Versions
    • MAMP
    • VirtualHostX
    • Illustrator
    • Photoshop
    • 1Password
    • Alfred
    • CloudApp
    • ColorSnapper
    • Fantastical
    • BetterTouchTool
    • Flux
    • Caffeine
    • Growl
    • CodeKit
    • Aptus
    • ColorSchemer Studio
    • Eon
    • Fontcase
    • Kaleidoscope
    • xScope
    • Skitch
  • thanks guys, will check that out
  • I use *shudders* Dreamweaver.

I just use the code view because it has a lot of neat time-saving features.
  • @joshuanhibbert

    You just made my month.
  • I also love Sublime Text 2 - totally worth it! Also a great tool is "Gradient" helps with CSS gradients and I keep it open when coding so I can test and select colours using it's color dropper.

MAMP really is a must, though I don't use the Pro Version. It's main benefit is PHP/MySQL, but your Mac actually comes with built in Apache.

I also use Scout which is a tool to help out with SASS/COMPASS - helping to generate your stylesheets, rather than having to use the terminal.
  • thanks
    will keep that in mind

one of main reasons to convert from PC were Chris' screencasts where he sometimes mentions apps only for MAC which greatly enhace the work while developing websites
  • I'm also a recent Mac convert, I got mine about 2 months ago. Trust me, you'll be loving it shortly and wonder what you did without it.

Whenever I use my Windows 7 laptop now I find it so frustrating, especially not having multiple desktops!
  • hi,

    sry
1st post was wrong, I wanted to write "I want to buy"

    so now I have dilema:

    MacBook Pro
    or
    MacBook Air
    ?

    any recommendations?
  • I agree with CristopherBurton. Go pro. I went pro and I am loving it ever since.
  • Only go Pro if you're planning on buying 15" or larger. I'd take the 13" Air over the Pro any day.
  • Pro all the way!

    @joshuanhibbert
Totally going to check out Sublime Text2 - Thx!
  • @TheDoc
    good point :)

I am curious how many people here is from US and how many MAC users from Europe
to be honest MACs are not so common here and well not in my country anyway
  • lol I'm not sure if this is available on Mac but I (the crazy, crazy person) downloaded PHP, MySQL and Apache all separately.

    :P

I am on windows, and Wamp doesn't look as nice as Mamp.

anyways If I had a mac maybe I'd have mamp. :D
  • PHP and Apache are included with Mac OS X - you just need to enable them (very easy). You can install MySQL separately. Many people don't want the technical challenge (not hard) and opt for MAMP.

krysak, it's Mac, not MAC. I'd go for the pro myself...
  • I'm intrigued by all of the 'Pro' choices. Why would you take the Pro over the Air?

Are we talking about the 13", 15" or 17"?

For me, it's a no-brainer at the 13" level, gotta go for the Air - the speed that you'll get from the SSD will be fantastic and it'll be so easy to travel with.

At home, you'll most likely be hooking it up to a monitor to work on, so the screen size isn't too big of an issue, especially if you're coding.
  • @TheDoc I can only offer the reason I went for a Pro over an Air (although i got a 15"): I need as much power as possible for my design work (It's plugged into a 24" monitor at home). My next upgrade will be a SSD for sure.
  • I absolutely couldn't stare at a 13" screen. Not even for emailing on the go. I was specifically speaking of the 15". I can't work with anything smaller.

If you're going to use it for work, I certainly wouldn't buy it then.
  • I was working on 13" notebook, no problem
now I have 2nd notebook 15.6", worse to travel with for sure

I agree with @TheDoc, the smaller the better
while at home I have the notebook stationery anyway plugged in 27" LCD
