Background image / background color fall back

I am using a full background image and it does not work in the older browsers. So I need the fall back color to be black. but if I make the fall back color black, it overwrites my background. Any suggestions?

How about showing us what you have?
How old of a browser are you talking about? IE2? There seems to be something amiss here.
