I think it would be a nice experiment. Where one person, can just start designing a layout, pass it off to someone else, they add more, pass it off, then add more, etc. It would be interesting to see where the design would go if there was no initial group decision of what the end product should look like, or the purpose of the site designed.
So this isn't technically crowdsourcing, it's more like the game telephone, but still interesting none the less.
What you need to do is organize it. Start a post with all details and rules and let people sign up. Make a list of people joining and make a start date. On the start date each person in the correct order gets 1 day to work on the .PSD. When the day has ended upload it, post the link in the forum post. Do that for each entry and you get the result.
I really like this idea too. I agree that some organization is probably necessary to make sure it doesn't get chaotic. I think we should decide on general goal for the design (e.g. A website for a radio station) but be pretty open ended other than that.
I think we should limit it to like 10 people tops. Even that might be too many cooks in the kitchen, but we'll see what happens!
Next 9 people to reply on this thread that want in, are in. Then we'll randomize the order and kick it off. Maybe we'll lay down some ground rules before we start. Here's some things off the top of my head:
- Try and work off what has already been done. Tweak, re-arrange, tighten up, add stuff, whatever. If you need to delete something, so be it, but don't totally scrap it and start over. - One day per person, tops - When they are done, we'll post to the specified thread with a live link to the PSD. Use cloudapp or dropbox or your own website or something.
let's stick to Photoshop for this round and then maybe follow up later with HTML. I feel like that's kinda of less interesting as far as "telephone" style fun goes.
I would love to give it a try, though i must admit, I'm not on the same level as some of you guys....
Also, maybe if we are really going to do this till the end, let's make it something useful, like a website for a charitable organization... After all, 'Tis the season...
Ok, so now what. Who comes up with the full list of details? Maybe chris will manage it. I'd say. We wait one more day from now exactly. And if he doesn't pick it up. We do it in this post by ourselves. :)
I think you guys can manage it on your own =) My thoughts are that you would start from total scratch, so the first person gets a totally blank canvas. They should probably set up a little structure and and focus on some area, but don't create an entire design. Then each person takes it from there doing whatever tweaks they wish and focusing on another area. Always attempting, of course, to make it better.
I think we should all have a meeting to discuss and come to an agreement on what we want to do. Does everyone use gmail and the gmail chat? Or what chat client could we use? Please, do not say windows live messenger. It's crap.
Tis the season for charity, do a donations-based charity style site. Say, for a dog rescue. I don't care what you do, just throwing out an idea. The CSS Off is a go for next year, but it's already got kind of a plan in place.
@PeretzM gets till the end of 23-12-2010 and needs to upload the design and post the link here. From there we do one each day. So @andrewsellenrick has to be done by 24-12-2010. And if people don't make the deadline you just continue with the latest design.
I think it's January, but I'm not sure on exact dates. I'm just kinda helping out this year not heading it up. It's going to be bigger and better though. More details when appropriate.
Do you guys remember the cuppy cake kid aka cuppy cake sam from youtube who was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease IGM Nephropathy?. He has written a children's book and is trying to find a cure for his disease. His video went viral with millions of views. He's been on the Tyra Banks show and many more. I think we should re-design his website from scratch. Especially being an advocate for charity in Spinal Injury, it would be a great gift to give this young kid. What do you think?
Ok, PeretzM. If you want you can switch. I guess it's nicer to have a goal for a design. That extends your period. Which means you have till 24-12-2010. Is that ok?

I'd join it :)

Still room for one more!
This feels like Lost Oceanic 6 debate about whether Aron counted as a person or not =)

Have fun, and let the designing begin!
Also, @ChrisCoyier, when does the CSS-off start next year? I wasn't good enough last year to do it.
I will post a link here to my design when done.
