First thoughts? the first second i was thinking what the F**** happened to my browser?! and then i thought, no way! he did this again! so quickly! i loved the load of his previous design, i did have a small menu problem (the border radius' were different, just for me, visuially was non-appealing. but now this?! i like it i like it a lot. how the different pages have different styles to them :) GOOD JOB CHRIS!
I love the new design. I have to admit the old one was kind of bland but this one really popped to me. It's amazing. It flows well, it's very functional, doesn't slow down the page load time. The man behind this site is a web genius. Mad props!
Yes! This I like. I was harsh with my last criticisms last time, but this is something I can learn to love. Personally, I'd soften out some (not all) of the straight lines with some rounded corners here and there, maybe.. but otherwise, I personally find it better than the last version. Good work! I love how the comments are styled, especially. :)
@nosecreek - Sorry about that! 1024px people on this site are at about 6%, which is fairly low but not low enough to ignore yet, so I do plan to accomodate that as soon as I can.
Interesting new design Chris, I was digging through some old IE fix articles when all of a sudden BANG everything changed!.. The forums still had the old look so I knew you were working actively on it ;)
I like the old theme a lot more. It had more of a simplistic value and all around modern look. This new design reminds me of Easter. The buysellads background doesn't seem to match well and the footer just seems bland, maybe a background color added to it might look better? We can all agree Chris has an enormous amount of talent, no question about that but, I don't think this new design was a good idea.
I'm sure the new site will grow on me, it was a bold change, and a shock! I'm sure it will be adapted over the coming weeks as there are a few issues with its layout in Chrome 7 on Win. # article:before - the turned page triangle is a pixel to far down, showing a white artifact above # bsa_it - the ad image is being sqaushed out of proportion.
Hey Chris Coyier! Love the new look, but how cool would it be if you added some media queries for this layout for those people with smaller or bigger resolutions, kind of like what abduzeedo is doing. On another note, no footer when on the forum? Seems a bit odd. Anywho, still love this one!
Ah yes, very cool. Does this forum have the ability to show you who is viewing the topic you are reading? If so that would be something cool to put as the footer of the forums, kind of what like phpbb does; eg: cpj238, chriscoyier, and guest are viewing
Also, the Post Comment, left unstyled on purpose? If so, I actually kind of like that, gives it more meaning.
I think that the 'Post Comment' button would need to be styled as it just doesn't look right now. I do agree, however, that it would need to be styled differently. Maybe the same 'size' as the other buttons, but in a 'not-so-vivid' green - green for go?
Aside from the slight issues I mentioned earlier, I really like the new style. Really nice how the bright colours bleed through depending on which page you are on.
wow, not impressed at all. both FF and Chrome for me give me a vertical menu at the top, no sidebar at all, IE at least has a horizontal one, with sidebar, not really sure what the page is supposed to look like, it is totally different in FF/Chrome than in IE7, don't have IE8/9
the font in the forums seems to be a lot larger than in the previous theme, is this on purpose?
@almcrorie - checked out this new layout in IETester which has IE8/7/6 and here is what I found.
IE8 - Looks fine, degrades nicely, width is fine IE7 - Header and side bar are there, but the content area is a skew and the footer wraps up. IE6 - Header is good, search is gone, content area blown out as well as footer (but who supports IE6 these days anyways, lol)
Firefox (Mac) - Looks purrrrrty, but the article border's are slightly off in the top left. Chrome (Mac) - The best by far. If you have chrome, use it as your main for css-tricks.com ;) Safari - Surprisingly not as good as Chrome, the article border is slightly off here as well
We're all nit-picking chris' design here, but I am sure he appreciates the feedback, but saying "not impressed at all" isn't very constructive.
I run IE7 under Win XP here so that is what I am basing my comments on. I guess I grew up on IE and still primarily use it, for better or worse. my laptop is a few years old and I have not bothered updating to IE8, any time I tried it would not install so I left it as is. need W7 to run IE9, and don't have that.
in IE7, home page has horizontal menu items, followed by a large blank white space, followed by title Latest Screencast then farther down the page has an entry for for the wufoo screencast, no other posts at all. on FF here, the top menu is a vertical menu with full page width for each item. totally different posts show up compared to IE7, no sidebar, etc, just looks like a single column site on FF to me, same with the Chrome version I use, no idea what level mine are at.
again the home page looks totally different between IE7 and FF/Chrome so I have no idea what the home page is supposed to look like. I will wait and see what evolves with the new site but right now it is really a shocker to get this when you access the site. small differences you might expect but major ones like this, no.
just my opinion based on my observations with the browsers I use,
Love the colours. Can you please put the code tags back in, they are missing again. I'm also having a little difficulty with the font size in FF 3.5 on Mac. At regular size the font is huge, and if I decrease one notch, some of the links become too small.
Anyone else having an issue of being at the bottom of the page, and scolling up? All seems to go to hell at that point. Using FF 3.6 and tried on both XP and W7.
I mean, if I scoll down to read the replys in the forum, or read comments on an article, and i grab the scroll bar and go to the top of the page real quick, things get really sketchy and freezes
*Edit: I don't seem to be having that problem anymore. Maybe something in the back end has been worked out, or maybe it was just FF being weird.

Keep up the awesome work.

BUT - I like a lot.

Also the rollover effect on the nav links doesn't seem to work in FF. They just snap, whereas in Chrome and Safari they have nice animation.
I do like the bigness of everything, though, and it does have a nice overall flow to it.
Props for having the cajones and chops to roll out major redesigns so often.
