Chris's recent post about ad standards got me thinking about portrait standards.
I have to upload and shuffle around LOTS of official portraits of people for the company & organizational websites I maintain. And having to manually resize & reoptimize photos really stinks. I'm wondering if a web standard (or even just a suggestion!) for portraits has ever been developed. I'm currently going with an 8x10 style aspect ratio that works well:
Icon: 20x25 @ 72 or 96ppi Thumbnail: 40x50 @ 72 or 96ppi Mini-Portrait: 80x100 @ 72 or 96ppi Portrait: 160x200 @ 72 or 96ppi (most pages) Mega-Portrait: 320x400 @ 72 or 96ppi ('feature' pages) Printable Portrait: 2000x2500 @ 250dpi (download and print 8"x10")
I don't think you are going to find any standard sizes for this sort of thing. It'll just depend on the company you are working with, and of course the design of the web site.
Perhaps working out fixed ratios (5:4, 16:9, etc) might be another solution? Most photo's are already taken to standards like those and you can then just adjust the width or height dimension to suit your layout, the ratio would remain. It cuts down on cropping or resizing...
