I saw some beautiful sharing buttons on Forrst and decided to replicate them using CSS.

Frankly these look great (to me). Other than adding, perhaps, a hover class to each, I see no need to improve.

Yes, agreed. Pretty sure Google and Facebook in particular don't want you using anything but their buttons.

I think it has to do with people being malicious with the buttons and for users to feel safe if they click on it.

Oops..so they do...the over state is a bit subtle on my quite bright monitor although the position shift ought to have given it away. :)
